The Smoky Mountains are a great central location for a number of day trips.  One dog friendly day trip is a day in Knoxville.  Only 40 miles away, a drive to Knoxville takes less than an hour.  Here are some of Knoxville’s dog-friendly attractions:

PetSafe Dog ParkVisit PetSafe Dog Park!

Knoxville’s first dog park features a natural pond, full set of agility equipment, walking trails and a doggy water fountain.  This is an “on-leash” park except for specified “off leash” times.  Please visit the PetSafe website to learn about all park rules before you visit!

Ijams Nature Center

This  275-acre wildlife sanctuary has over 10 miles of trails.  Grounds and trails are free to the public and open during daylight hours.  Leashed dogs are welcome!  The Sanctuary is situated on the Ijams Family’s original homestead, with ponds, rock gardens, and overlooks.  Beyond the homesite, the sanctuary sprawls over rolling woodlands, with wildflower trails and a boardwalk on the Tennessee River.  Trail maps are available for $1 at the Visitor Center.

Other things to see here (without your dog unfortunately) include a raptor enclosure and amphitheatre, visitor center with exhibits, gift shop and restrooms, Invertebrate Inn, and Teenie Playhouse!
